» FIRST LOOK!

Where am I?

Jacob blinked.  He was in a hotel suite – a luxurious one, from the looks of it.  Beyond a set of glass French doors was a beautiful view.  He stepped closer.  Far below, white sand beaches were lapped by aquamarine waves, and palm trees swayed in the soft, warm breeze. The suite was very high up, he noticed, in a sort of tower.  He turned away from the balcony, examining the suite itself.  A door opened from the living room to a sumptuous bedroom.

There, in the bedroom, was Rory.

She was no longer in a hospital gown, but a high-cut teddy of dusky rose-colored silk.  She was swathed in ecru satin sheets.

She was still asleep.

He approached her slowly, his heart pounding, just as it had the first time he'd seen her.  And, he admitted, every time he'd seen her since.  What was it about this young woman that made his chest clench and his throat constrict?  How did someone he didn't know, someone who couldn't speak, affect him so profoundly?

"Rory," he whispered.  He touched her arm tentatively.

She stirred, turning restlessly towards him.

She moved.

He froze, his heart stopping, then starting at twice the speed.  He stroked a long strand of hair away from her face.

"Mmmmm."

Sound!  She'd made a sound!

Exultant, he felt excitement bubble through him like champagne, threatening to explode.  He wanted to shout, jump, do something outrageous to celebrate this momentous occasion.  Sound!  Movement!  After six years… holy shit, this was progress!

He punched the air with a low "yes!" of victory, then leaned down, smiling, and kissed her on the lips, a quick, happy, thoughtless gesture.

Then he froze again, aghast at what he'd just done.

What the hell are you thinking? You're a doctor!  She's your patient!  Are you insane?

Remorse flooded through him, and he took a step back, castigating himself.

Suddenly, her eyes opened, a series of languorous, sleepy blinks.  Her dove gray eyes focused on his face.

"Who are you?"  Her voice was sleep-husky, hoarse, and surprised.

For a moment, he forgot his own name.  "Jacob," he finally said, too shocked to introduce himself properly.

"Jacob," she repeated, her voice like a low purr.  She sat up.  "Jacob.  I've never… seen you before, have I?"

"No," he admitted, trying not to stare.  Besides the miracle of her sitting up, he couldn't help but notice that the teddy was low cut in the front, showcasing her generous breasts in the most tantalizing way.  He forced himself to focus on her face instead.  That didn't improve matters:  he found himself getting lost in those silvery eyes.  He finally looked away, out the window, struggling to regain his control.

"Jacob," she murmured, and he was lost.  He was drawn inexorably toward her, sitting down next to her on the bed.  She reached out, cupping the side of his face, turning it towards her.  "Your voice," she said softly. "It's so familiar, somehow."

Her palm was warm, her touch feather-light.  It shouldn't have been arousing, but his muscles tensed, his cock going erect, his breathing shallow.

"Did you kiss me, Jacob?"

He swallowed hard.  "Yes."

"I was asleep."

"Yes."  Shame flushed his face.

She leaned forward.  "Would you do it again?  Now that I’m awake?"

He shouldn't.  He knew he…

You're dreaming.

He paused, then chuckled to himself, taking a quick glance at his surroundings.  He'd never been to a tropical island in his life.  Of course this wasn't real.

"Jacob?"

He looked back at Rory, whose eyes were low-lidded, her full lips curving in a smile of sensual invitation.

He smiled back hungrily.  Then, without a word, he leaned in.
